Taking place October 16-27, Mammothon is LifeBridge Health’s annual effort to promote breast cancer prevention and early detection. Mammothon offers our communities a quick and convenient mammogram scheduling experience with a personalized approach, allowing patients to easily maximize their chances of life-changing early detection.

Through our Wheels for Women program, our staff can arrange free, private transportation through Lyft to and from your mammogram or breast screening appointment. If getting to your appointment is a struggle, let our staff know after scheduling.

Wheels for Women, is a special partnership with the Brem Foundation to Defeat Breast Cancer, which provides free rides through the Lyft ride share service for patients where transportation is a barrier to getting screened.

A Focus on the Facts

To put it simply, breast cancer screenings save lives. The American Cancer Society reports that women who regularly have mammograms are:

  • More likely to benefit to have breast cancer found earlier

  • Less likely to need aggressive breast cancer treatments

  • More likely to be cured of breast cancer

The American Society of Breast Surgeons provides the following key guidelines for breast cancer screenings:

  • Women older than age 25 should undergo formal risk assessment for breast cancer

  • Women with an average risk of breast cancer should initiate yearly screening mammography at age 40

  • Women with a higher-than-average* risk of breast cancer should undergo yearly screening mammography and be offered yearly supplemental imaging; this screening should be initiated at a risk-based age

    • *People considered to be at higher-than-average risk for breast cancer include those who have been exposed to radiation and those who have a family history of breast cancer. Speak with your doctor to learn more about assessing your risk for breast cancer.

An Earlier Approach to Early Detection

In the fight against breast cancer, awareness makes a difference in more ways than one. That’s why we’re spreading the word that most insurances cover annual exams starting at age 40. You’re entitled to an annual mammogram from age 40 and up, and by taking advantage of this earlier start to annual exams, you give yourself the best possible chance of prevention and early detection. To find out if you need a referral, consult with your physician and/or insurance provider.

For those considered to be at high risk of breast cancer due to family history or other factors, screening guidelines and recommendations may vary. Genetic testing services may be helpful in assessing your risk level and recommended age for yearly screening.

An Inclusive Approach to Breast Exams

Cancer doesn’t discriminate. People of all gender identities can be diagnosed with breast cancer, and LifeBridge Health is committed to ensuring a safe, inclusive and understanding experience for all those who may be at risk. Regardless of who you are, we’re here to help provide you with the best possible chance for prevention and early detection. Consult with your physician and/or insurance provider to find out if you need a referral. Below, we’ve included some of the latest breast cancer prevention guidelines for trans and gender non-conforming people.

Transfeminine Individuals (Male-to-Female)

The Journal of the American College of Radiology recommends screenings for:

  • Average-risk transfeminine individuals 40 years of age or older with five or more years of hormone use

  • Higher than average-risk transfeminine individuals 25 to 30 years of age with five or more years of hormone use

  • Higher than average-risk transfeminine individuals 25 to 30 years old with little to no hormone use.

For average-risk transfeminine individuals with little to no hormone use, no test is appropriate.

Transmasculine Individuals (Female-to-Male)

The Journal of the American College of Radiology recommends screenings for:

  • Average-risk transmasculine individuals who are 40 years of age or older with breast reduction or no chest surgery

  • Intermediate-risk transmasculine individuals 30 years of age or older with breast reduction or no chest surgery

  • High-risk transmasculine individuals 25 to 30 years of age

For transmasculine individuals with bilateral mastectomies (“top surgery”) of any age or risk, no test is appropriate.
